John Russell, R.A. (British, 1745-1806) Portrait of Captain Matthews, R.N., bust-length, in full dress uniform signed and dated in pencil 'J. Russell RA pinxt./1800-' pastel and bodycolour. John Matthews was made a Captain on 13th September 1793 and was still serving in this rank when he died on 21st March 1798, indicating this is a posthumous commemorative image.

Formaba parte del vapor Reina Maria Cristina perteneciente a la Compañía Trasatlántica Española y a bordo del cual viajó por todo el mundo. Fué precisamente en este barco donde conoció a mi bisabuela, Carmen Alegría Mugica (1885-1962)".
