We could observe the gentoo penguins at work, moving pebbles around: stealing, losing and replacing. This almost becomes more entertaining the more you watch them as you get to see the personalities of the gentoo penguins. Picture by Daniel Höhne.

Adélie penguins create nests by piling little stones in circles. Once the egg is laid in December the parents take turns incubating the egg and going to hunt. The parent that stays behind does not eat during their turn with the egg. Picture by Hazel Pittwood.

Vocally, rockhopper penguins are very loud, throwing back their heads and “braying” different signals to each other – sometimes for location, sometimes to warn others to back off, other times to locate their mate and chicks amidst the vast throng. Picture by Juan Berenstein.
Our vessel Ortelius repositioned to Grand Jason Island, a place that none of the expedition team had ever been to. We followed a pole-marked trail through the massive clumps of tussock grass to an enormous colony of black-browed albatrosses and rockhopper penguins. Cameras click incessantly…wildlife photo opportunities everywhere… guests were delighted. Picture by Sara Jenner.
Rockhoppers will form vast breeding colonies (sometimes up to hundreds of thousands) during mating seasons. They differ from most other types of penguins in that they can become quite aggressive toward each other, fighting for nesting sites, mating rights, and food. When fighting, they’ll slap at each other with their flippers. Picture by Juan Berenstein.

Magellanic penguins do not have any natural predators in the beach areas where they breed. However while at sea they are prey to leopard seals, large fur seals, and orcas. Picture by Sara Jenner.
Contrary to what its name may suggest, Carcass Island is a lively place for viewing breeding Magellanic and gentoo penguins. On this picture you see some of the Magellanic penguins we encountered during a landing on Carcass Island. Picture by Sara Jenner.
