Luftschlacht um England or the Battle of England was carried by the Germans during the summer ant autumn months of 1940; it was thought to be an adaptation of the Blitzkrieg elaborated on continental Europe to suit to that island nation. It has been stopped suddenly by Hitler; the 5:1 ratio of German against British airmen killed was indeed a very high price paid by the Luftwaffe.
