PERIPHERAL vs. CENTRAL LINES
In nursing, either as a student or a new grad nurse, it’s important to understand the difference between peripheral and central lines: ⭐️Peripheral lines →thin flexible tube inerted into a peripheral vein →referred to by gauge size (lower number=bigger diameter) →a MIDLINE is a longer peripheral line usually inserted for patients that are hard sticks, and must be inserted by a PICC nurse ⭐️Central lines →catheter inserted into large vein that ends in the superior vena cava →there are multiple typrs of central lines, difference is how they’re inserted →Indication could include medication, volume needs, or prolonged access → important to watch for CAUTI’s by implementing proper care per facility protocols (CHG, sterile dressing changes, D/Cing when medically able, etc.)
