Netherlands-4217 - Portrait of a Couple
Portrait of a Couple (1622) by Frans Hals (1582-1666), Dutch - The couple is probably Isaac Abrahamsz Massa and Beatrix van der Laen married in 1622. He was a Dutch Golden Age portrait painter. He is notable for his loose painterly brushwork, and he helped introduce this lively style of painting into Dutch art. Hals played an important role in the evolution of 17th-century group portraiture (wiki) (posted by Dennis Jarvis)

Frans Hals | Portrait of a Man | The Metropolitan Museum of Art
"Portrait of a Man" by Frans Hals (1650s) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York - From the curators' comments: "In this canvas of the early 1650s, the figure's pose follows a pattern Hals employed twenty years earlier, but here the arrangement is more frontal and contained. The resulting impression of reserve or authority is relieved by the relaxed expression, and perhaps by the French fashions of flounced sleeves and colorful ribbons at the waist."
