Woodworking Chisels

We talk about pallets a lot here and recycling for woodworking. But that is because it is one of the greatest and easiest methods of getting free wood because so many companies will throw them out either once they are used, or once they have a broken board...

Oil on canvas, Boxwood handled paring chisels. This is a still life of my collection of London pattern, octagonal handled chisels shown as they sit arranged in the drawer of my tool chest. The different colours of the handles show the different ages of the chisels. The yellowest one is pretty much new, the next yellowest is from the 1960s and the redest is a victorian chisel. They are a mixture of paring chisels, gouges and carving chisels.

These chisels from Narex have a classic design with blades that are bevel-edged to a narrow land on each side, providing excellent clearance when trimming into an angled corner such as in dovetail work, as well as reducing sidewall friction when working in a tight recess. Made to our specifications in Imperial sizes, the blades are accurately ground chrome-manganese steel, hardened to Rc59. The stained beech handles have steel hoops and ferrules for strength, and are oval shaped for comfort…

So here it is, a wood store for our recently installed log burning stove, I just need to order some logs. Projects like this make a pleasant change (apart from the cold and rain!) from fine furniture and tools. It was quick to make and I particularly enjoyed doing the cedar shingle roof. That just leaves me to wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year, with plenty of woodworking!
