Known locally as ‘Snoopy in a blender’, this Jean Dubuffet sculpture next to Helmut Jahn’s Thompson Center is officially entitled ‘Monument with Standing Beast’. Less gross, its affection moniker still manages to provoke a disturbing mental image. Taken to represent a standing animal, a tree, a portal and an architectural form, in this picture looks rather more like a gaping Cyclops flicking the finger. Freud would have had a field day with that interpretation.
This iconic ‘diamond’ building at 11 Diagonal Street in Johannesburg was commissioned by Anglo American & was designed by the renowned architect, Helmut Jahn. It resembles a multi-faceted diamond, with massive glass sheets placed at varying angles reflecting different images of the surrounding buildings - Amazing architecture!
