Students Cite Evidence from Informational and Literary Text - Common Core Literacy by Expeditionary Learning. Julia St. Martin's 10th grade ELA class at the Springfield Renaissance School in Springfield, MA uses a fishbowl protocol to practice citing evidence from informational text to support their reasoning. Joining the informational and literary texts enhances understanding of the topic for students.
Learning A-Z websites emphasize the importance of text-dependent learning Text-dependent Questions are an essential part of the Common Core State Standards. To prepare students for both college and career, they must learn how to answer these questions by closely reading and investigating informational text. Students must also learn to cite evidence to support their responses either verbally or in writing.
Text evidence bulletin. This visual display helps students see the connections that must be made from their text, to their thinking, and into their writing responses. This copy isn't the best because the ink in my cartridge was low, but it works. We use the RACE strategy to formulate our written response answers. R-restate, A-answer, C-cite evidence, E-expand!

Great way to teach finding evidence from the text. After reading a book together as a class come up with an argument (ex. Julius is the Baby of the World) and have each class member look through the text to find and cite statements that support this argument. Then go through them as a class and talk about which statements supported the argument and which didn't.
