Wadlopen: walking through the Wadden Sea from Holwerd, Friesland to Ameland

Getting Muddy in the Netherlands

A soggy, trek through Wadden Sea, one of the world’s last large-scale inter-tidal ecosystems, has to be timed just right with the tides.

Mud walking (in Dutch: wadlopen) is an exciting and adventurous way of acquainting oneself with a unique nature reserve, the Wadden Sea, also the largest continuous national park in Europe.

During a typical mud wrestle through miles of mire and thigh-deep brown mud, wade through channels of waist high water before arriving on one of the islands in the Wadden Sea.

Wadlopen in Pieterburen is a wonderful experience! Learn all about how the dikes were built to create land and see fantastic views, all while trying not to fall in the silt! We laughed so hard the entire trip! About a 3 hour round trip and totally worth it!
