She was heir presumptive to her niece, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, for seven years, from the death of her brother until her own death.

Prince Willem died in his apartment near the Paris Opera from a combination of typhus, liver complaints and total exhaustion. His debauched lifestyle was often mentioned in the newspapers. His body was entombed in the royal crypt in the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft.
