From "MAKING A MARQUE ROLLS-ROYCE MOTOR CAR PROMOTION 1904-1940". Another advertisement in 1907 from the Walter C. Martin agency, the sole importer appointed by Rolls. Most notable here is the quality of the illustrations. These are both for the 30 h.p., the only model available in the USA for customers to test at this early stage. There comes a time when the book has to go for print – but lovely examples still come to light. Here are two that didn’t make the deadline. The second is a coachbuilder advertisement from France, featuring a Kellner-bodied Phantom II. It appeared in the October 1931 Paris Salon edition of Figaro Artistique Illustré. It needed no text beyond the coachbuilder’s name and address. #RollsRoyce #DaltonWatsonFineBooks

There comes a time when the book has to go for print – but lovely examples still come to light. Here are two that didn’t make the deadline. The first is rare colour Phantom III publicity from The Sydney Mail Annual of 1 October 1938. Most Australian Rolls-Royce advertisements were by retailers, and this is no exception: the New South Wales distributors Appleby and Ward. #RollsRoyce #DaltonWatsonFineBooks

Making A Marque Rolls-Royce Motor Car Promotion 1904-1940
As early as 1912 Motor Cycling magazine had recommended readers to buy an Indian bike, “The Rolls-Royce of Motor Cycles”, and Rolls-Royce had proudly recorded that fact in their advertising. But the only motorcycle maker to use the phrase in their own advertising was Brough Superior. Research for the book uncovered the true origin of that phrase, and why Brough was allowed to use it for many years. #RollsRoyce #DaltonWatsonFineBooks

As early as 1911, only seven years after Rolls met Royce, companies were using the phrase “the Rolls-Royce of…” in their publicity to imply excellence. Rolls-Royce were proud of this and mentioned it in their own advertising. Here is their advertisement from 1912 listing mechanical piano-players, motor cycles, hotels and small cars. #RollsRoyce #DaltonWatsonFineBooks
