Books but your specialist subject but your specialist subject seems to be a man himself seems to be a man himself dealing with a queen. How did dealing with a queen. How did you get? how did you get you get? how did you get started with the subject That started with the subject That is the icon? Steve Well, my dad is the icon? Steve Well, my dad was the fan um my dad uh passed was the fan um my dad uh passed away in July. He was 83 years away in July. He was 83 years old and I had asked him old and I had asked him recently, You know what you recently, You know what you know. why did you take me to know. why did you take me to Steve McQueen movies He’d take Steve McQueen movies He’d take me out of school and then we’d me out of school and then we’d go to Steve McQueen movies and go to Steve McQueen movies and I asked him, I said when were I asked him, I said when were you. And he said, well it you. And he said, well it started with one life and then started with one life and then when I grew up age, McQueen had when I grew up age, McQueen had didn’t become a movie star so didn’t become a movie star so um I had always known him as a um I had always known him as a movie star and so um and then movie star and so um and then when he was 16 years old, he when he was 16 years old, he suddenly passed away and it was suddenly passed away and it was kinda like wow my childhood kinda like wow my childhood like part of my childhood is like part of my childhood is gone. It was really not not gone. It was really not not devastating. What it’s kinda devastating. What it’s kinda like when John Lennon passed, like when John Lennon passed, you you know that’s devastating you you know that’s devastating um and Steve was kinda the same um and Steve was kinda the same and they both passed away a and they both passed away a month within each other. That’s month within each other. That’s right. Yeah. November December right. Yeah. November December was it December 8 and it’s just was it December 8 and it’s just yeah this new book of is yeah this new book of is published on the anniversary of published on the anniversary of his death Wasn’t this, Yes the his death Wasn’t this, Yes the fortieth anniversary, which is fortieth anniversary, which is hard to believe that so many hard to believe that so many years have gone by so quickly. years have gone by so quickly. I don’t think would have been I don’t think would have been 100 is that right, we’ll see 100 is that right, we’ll see what happens it would have been what happens it would have been ninety. I believe yeah, Oh ninety. I believe yeah, Oh okay, how wouldn’t do any past okay, how wouldn’t do any past fifty? then huh. He was fifty. fifty? then huh. He was fifty. Yeah. John John was forty so Yeah. John John was forty so yeah. he was 10 years old. yeah. he was 10 years old. Yeah. It’s just amazing. Yeah. It’s just amazing. amazing. I remember my Steve amazing. I remember my Steve McQueen um sort of not memory McQueen um sort of not memory but realization was we used to but realization was we used to go in every year with uh Jim go in every year with uh Jim Jimmy Mac Jim McCartney. My Jimmy Mac Jim McCartney. My Step dad who’s wedding Step dad who’s wedding anniversary. It is today so anniversary. It is today so wedding anniversary um we used wedding anniversary um we used to go to a place just north of to go to a place just north of Liverpool called the Lake Liverpool called the Lake District in Northwest England District in Northwest England and we’d stay at a little and we’d stay at a little family hotel called the Swiss family hotel called the Swiss and it was very sort of you and it was very sort of you know and Swiss food in the know and Swiss food in the middle of the English woods and middle of the English woods and lakes. It was beautiful, but of lakes. It was beautiful, but of course they didn’t have course they didn’t have televisions in the room. In televisions in the room. In those days, they had a TV room those days, they had a TV room and a screening room so they and a screening room so they had like this screen that would had like this screen that would pull down from the ceiling and pull down from the ceiling and Sunday nights was movie night. Sunday nights was movie night. That was where I felt a bullet That was where I felt a bullet yes and so we’re sitting in the yes and so we’re sitting in the wooded countryside of England wooded countryside of England watching Steve McQueen race watching Steve McQueen race down Lombard streets and it was down Lombard streets and it was quite the fish out of water quite the fish out of water moment and I was only a kid I moment and I was only a kid I was probably fourteen fourteen was probably fourteen fourteen or something, but I had quite a or something, but I had quite a crush on our Steve. He was uh crush on our Steve. He was uh he was a Jim Jim never went to he was a Jim Jim never went to the movies very much. I only the movies very much. I only went about three times with went about three times with him, but that one that movie we him, but that one that movie we used to talk about over and used to talk about over and over really impressed and was over really impressed and was one of his favorite. Yeah. So one of his favorite. Yeah. So how did you? Did you get how did you? Did you get started down the road of started down the road of writing books about Stephen writing books about Stephen Well, I was in a situation Well, I was in a situation where I was just graduating where I was just graduating college and I was married at college and I was married at the time and um my boss went to the time and um my boss went to jail and the corporation jail and the corporation crumbled and my wife left me. crumbled and my wife left me. so my dad calls me and he says so my dad calls me and he says you know your your job’s gone you know your your job’s gone your wife’s gone. What’s your your wife’s gone. What’s your next trick in a base so next trick in a base so basically you’ve already had basically you’ve already had your twenty. Yeah yes. Well, your twenty. Yeah yes. Well, yes, I did and um I was living yes, I did and um I was living in Arizona at the time here, in Arizona at the time here, but they were living in but they were living in Washington DC at the time and Washington DC at the time and this is pre internet. so he this is pre internet. so he asked me that question. What’s asked me that question. What’s your next trip gonna be and I your next trip gonna be and I said, well, actually, I do have said, well, actually, I do have a trick up my sleeve. I’ve a trick up my sleeve. I’ve always wanted to write a book always wanted to write a book on Steve McQueen and um, and he on Steve McQueen and um, and he said, Okay. Uh how long will said, Okay. Uh how long will this take and I said I don’t this take and I said I don’t know two 3 years. He goes how know two 3 years. He goes how you gonna support yourself, I you gonna support yourself, I said. Well, you’re gonna said. Well, you’re gonna support me. And uh sure enough, support me. And uh sure enough, he said. Okay. Well, these were he said. Okay. Well, these were his words, he said If you’re his words, he said If you’re you’re young enough to where you’re young enough to where you if you fail, you can always you if you fail, you can always get a job and that gave me the get a job and that gave me the great confidence to go ahead great confidence to go ahead and take on this endeavor So um and take on this endeavor So um I moved back there, I went to I moved back there, I went to the library of Congress. I had the library of Congress. I had no idea I was gifted in no idea I was gifted in research, but I really wanted research, but I really wanted this so I went back there um I this so I went back there um I did all my. They told me it did all my. They told me it would take 6 months took me 6 would take 6 months took me 6 weeks and then I started just weeks and then I started just pacing the story together pacing the story together started calling people in started calling people in Hollywood and a lot of major Hollywood and a lot of major stars open their homes to me stars open their homes to me and um that’s how it all got and um that’s how it all got started in the in the book was started in the in the book was the best seller and that’s how the best seller and that’s how my career started. So it’s very my career started. So it’s very lucky. Well, you know luck is lucky. Well, you know luck is what is it? They say success is what is it? They say success is where luck is we’re prepared where luck is we’re prepared this week’s opportunity so with this week’s opportunity so with all the research that you’ve all the research that you’ve done, you certainly were done, you certainly were prepared and you want to have prepared and you want to have the gift. Of being able to the gift. Of being able to write what you certainly do, write what you certainly do, obviously um but at the time I obviously um but at the time I had never written a thing and had never written a thing and my dad had a friend who was an my dad had a friend who was an editor and I didn’t know where editor and I didn’t know where a period went or quotation a period went or quotation went. Yeah. I mean I’m I’m went. Yeah. I mean I’m I’m serious and it’s so you just serious and it’s so you just learn these things um and this learn these things um and this is why um I wrote, wrote that is why um I wrote, wrote that first book uh in 2010 because first book uh in 2010 because then at that time, I had 20 then at that time, I had 20 years of journalism. Skills years of journalism. Skills under my belt and I wanted to under my belt and I wanted to show off to the world. Hey, I show off to the world. Hey, I can really write really do can really write really do right. I mean I think that’s a right. I mean I think that’s a great inspirational story for great inspirational story for anybody out there who watches anybody out there who watches this and thinks Oh I’d love to this and thinks Oh I’d love to write a book, but I don’t know write a book, but I don’t know what well now you have tools what well now you have tools like Grammarly and you know like Grammarly and you know Google Spell check and all of Google Spell check and all of those things. So it’s at least those things. So it’s at least yeah to start you do still need yeah to start you do still need somebody like Paul Guy here who somebody like Paul Guy here who proves things back. He reads a proves things back. He reads a book from the last word to the book from the last word to the first out of contact. So that first out of contact. So that to the White House told me that to the White House told me that years ago, she said when you years ago, she said when you prove something read it from prove something read it from the last word to the first the last word to the first word, don’t worry about the word, don’t worry about the context of the story. just the context of the story. just the spelling of those words, then spelling of those words, then read the story. Um I still do read the story. Um I still do it. Martin gives me a lot of it. Martin gives me a lot of things to prove of his guys things to prove of his guys project that he’s working on project that he’s working on now so always started at the now so always started at the end when finishes at the end when finishes at the beginning that way you take a beginning that way you take a word for it’s just yeah. that’s word for it’s just yeah. that’s your face value. Not you don’t your face value. Not you don’t get caught up in the story, but get caught up in the story, but I mean you know that you. How I mean you know that you. How you edited how many books I you edited how many books I don’t even know I mean, uh it’s don’t even know I mean, uh it’s it’s to the point where what it’s to the point where what happens is People ask me to happens is People ask me to write their book and I’ll say write their book and I’ll say uh I can’t write it for you uh I can’t write it for you because my agent would get mad because my agent would get mad at me but I can edit it for at me but I can edit it for you. so I get myself stuck in you. so I get myself stuck in those situations and so it’s a those situations and so it’s a book I must have edited, but book I must have edited, but that’s okay. I like editing that’s okay. I like editing that’s fine. So what about that’s fine. So what about this? um this latest book? Did this? um this latest book? Did that come about because it’s that come about because it’s just an amazing fabulous? I just an amazing fabulous? I mean it’s a dream. We pick it mean it’s a dream. We pick it up every night. We have couch up every night. We have couch time and a glass of wine and we time and a glass of wine and we we pick it up and just the we pick it up and just the detail in these pictures and detail in these pictures and how did you choose the pictures how did you choose the pictures and pick the quotes to go with and pick the quotes to go with them? Well? I’ll I’ll tell you them? Well? I’ll I’ll tell you how he started what happened how he started what happened was is that I think it was in was is that I think it was in 2013, I you know I I’ve written 2013, I you know I I’ve written my fair share of McQueen books my fair share of McQueen books so I say this ironically and so I say this ironically and that I saw other McQueen books that I saw other McQueen books being produced and it was kind being produced and it was kind of the same old same old. And of the same old same old. And if I was always with the other if I was always with the other authors on McQueen and I authors on McQueen and I thought wouldn’t be interesting thought wouldn’t be interesting if Steve McQueen told his own if Steve McQueen told his own story in his own words and story in his own words and without anybody putting their without anybody putting their own spin on it and I thought own spin on it and I thought you know, I have all this you know, I have all this research. I have all these research. I have all these quotes that I never use for the quotes that I never use for the books because you know with the books because you know with the book with the with the book with the with the narrative book you the best narrative book you the best quotes you don’t use all the quotes you don’t use all the quotes and um so II knew I had quotes and um so II knew I had enough research that I could enough research that I could pretty much piece it together. pretty much piece it together. His whole life story with him His whole life story with him telling a story from the start telling a story from the start to finish um and then the to finish um and then the pictures you know again pictures you know again accumulated those um throughout accumulated those um throughout the years and I’ve got McQueen the years and I’ve got McQueen fans who email me all around fans who email me all around the world and say hey, I had the world and say hey, I had this encounter with them. I had this encounter with them. I had this running with them and I’d this running with them and I’d say well do you have any say well do you have any pictures of it and they say pictures of it and they say yes, I do as a matter of fact yes, I do as a matter of fact and I’ve said you mind if I use and I’ve said you mind if I use it for this book and they were it for this book and they were absolutely thrilled to uh to to absolutely thrilled to uh to to lend it to me. so a lot of lend it to me. so a lot of these photos. You haven’t seen these photos. You haven’t seen for the first time a lot of for the first time a lot of these photos. uh you know have these photos. uh you know have been seen but so I just tried been seen but so I just tried to piece of every everything to piece of every everything together, Chronologically and together, Chronologically and then and then the last part of then and then the last part of the book, Barbara McQueen, the the book, Barbara McQueen, the widow allowed me uh the use of widow allowed me uh the use of those so I was I so I think I those so I was I so I think I would probably the only person would probably the only person in the world that could in the world that could possibly piece this together possibly piece this together and do it this way. Yeah, That and do it this way. Yeah, That was wonderful wasn’t meeting was wonderful wasn’t meeting with and I remember you with and I remember you introducing us to Barbara introducing us to Barbara briefly and Santa like a couple briefly and Santa like a couple of years. Charming lady and of years. Charming lady and we’re still in touch we keep in we’re still in touch we keep in touch on Facebook. Yeah, very touch on Facebook. Yeah, very uh very down to earth. Oh, I uh very down to earth. Oh, I already bought a lot of fun. A already bought a lot of fun. A lot of crazy fun. Yeah she um lot of crazy fun. Yeah she um how did your paths cross how did your paths cross initially with she um she initially with she um she didn’t well. We were both uh didn’t well. We were both uh interviewed for a documentary interviewed for a documentary and then the um the producer of and then the um the producer of it, said. You know, Barbara has it, said. You know, Barbara has these 500 photos of Steve these 500 photos of Steve McQueen that uh and she’s. Put McQueen that uh and she’s. Put a book together and she’d like a book together and she’d like for you to help her and I you for you to help her and I you know Steve’s final days. We’re know Steve’s final days. We’re always kind of elusive in a always kind of elusive in a mystery and so she was kind of mystery and so she was kind of that missing link and I said, that missing link and I said, absolutely I’d love to do it absolutely I’d love to do it and so she actually happened to and so she actually happened to live at the time in Lake Havasu live at the time in Lake Havasu City, which is about 3 hour City, which is about 3 hour drive from Arizona, so I would drive from Arizona, so I would just go down on weekends and we just go down on weekends and we do the book together for a do the book together for a period of time and then we period of time and then we really got to know each other really got to know each other well and became friends that well and became friends that way so sometimes it’s kind of a way so sometimes it’s kind of a fifty thing you either become fifty thing you either become friends with the people in your friends with the people in your books with or you do it the one books with or you do it the one time and you. Audios and that’s time and you. Audios and that’s goodbye and so you really get goodbye and so you really get to know a person when you write to know a person when you write a book with them, They’re a book with them, They’re sharing their lives through it. sharing their lives through it. Absolutely no, it’s it’s it’s Absolutely no, it’s it’s it’s like therapy but with an with like therapy but with an with an actual right that’s right. an actual right that’s right. That’s exactly right That’s exactly right therapeutic. It’s the with the therapeutic. It’s the with the bar code there you go um but bar code there you go um but there’s another ten connection there’s another ten connection is the knot between somebody is the knot between somebody else you wrote a book for slash else you wrote a book for slash with in Palm Springs and then with in Palm Springs and then he also had it’s a crazy story. he also had it’s a crazy story. right. Yeah, you’re talking right. Yeah, you’re talking about me. Hey, we’re at the about me. Hey, we’re at the angle side. Yes, tell us that angle side. Yes, tell us that the famous uh in keeper so Mel the famous uh in keeper so Mel there was there was another there was there was another McQueen documentary being McQueen documentary being filmed and um this gentleman filmed and um this gentleman his name is Richard Martin. I his name is Richard Martin. I went down to Palm Springs and went down to Palm Springs and he knew about bell and uh so he knew about bell and uh so Mel said. Uh you’re based in Mel said. Uh you’re based in this book on Marshall and he this book on Marshall and he said. yes he goes. I’ve read said. yes he goes. I’ve read his Steve McQueen book. He his Steve McQueen book. He goes. He have his phone number goes. He have his phone number and he said yes, so he gave me and he said yes, so he gave me his phone number and Mel and I his phone number and Mel and I started chatting and I knew started chatting and I knew instantly what a charming guy instantly what a charming guy this was and he’s like and he this was and he’s like and he said. To write my book and you said. To write my book and you know, but of course, he never know, but of course, he never mentioned money uh but he what mentioned money uh but he what he said was come on down to he said was come on down to Palm Springs. come stay at my Palm Springs. come stay at my place for a weekend. See how I place for a weekend. See how I do things and so basically when do things and so basically when he was doing was setting a trap he was doing was setting a trap for me because um what happened for me because um what happened was is that I didn’t actually was is that I didn’t actually strike a deal with Mel to write strike a deal with Mel to write his book for money We made a his book for money We made a deal where I would come out to deal where I would come out to Palm Springs twice a year and Palm Springs twice a year and stay at his place. We’re whole stay at his place. We’re whole thing we did the same. I never thing we did the same. I never watched the ad for his watched the ad for his websites, but boy I could I websites, but boy I could I could live on that spinach could live on that spinach salad and there’s martinis. salad and there’s martinis. Yeah, and that and that famous Yeah, and that and that famous challenge, but I always say challenge, but I always say that was the best deal I ever that was the best deal I ever made because I really fell in made because I really fell in love with a great city and as a love with a great city and as a matter of fact, my wife and I matter of fact, my wife and I are going to Palm Springs in a are going to Palm Springs in a couple weeks, but that allowed couple weeks, but that allowed me to get the no Palm springs. me to get the no Palm springs. It’s a way that I would not It’s a way that I would not have known but the famous story have known but the famous story about me and Steve McQuaid was about me and Steve McQuaid was Mel was opening his place. The Mel was opening his place. The opening night was October uh opening night was October uh 1975 restaurant at the Angle 1975 restaurant at the Angle Side Inn and at the time Palm’s Side Inn and at the time Palm’s friends was just kind of a friends was just kind of a sleepy little place, but the sleepy little place, but the elite of. And captains of elite of. And captains of industry had homes in Palm industry had homes in Palm Springs and anytime anything Springs and anytime anything open to Palm Springs. It was a open to Palm Springs. It was a big deal. It didn’t matter what big deal. It didn’t matter what the night was and all these the night was and all these people showed up and Steve people showed up and Steve McQueen was in the in this was McQueen was in the in this was post to Bruno when he kinda post to Bruno when he kinda became a hermit. He grew his became a hermit. He grew his hair long grew a long beard and hair long grew a long beard and a um so anyway, Mel has all a um so anyway, Mel has all these incredible people show these incredible people show up. he decides to go outside to up. he decides to go outside to take a cigarette break and low take a cigarette break and low and behold the sky in a and behold the sky in a motorcycle rides up with this motorcycle rides up with this beautiful woman on the back. beautiful woman on the back. And all is the guy with the And all is the guy with the long hair and the beard long hair and the beard thinking that he’s some biker thinking that he’s some biker dude and so Mel’s popping on dude and so Mel’s popping on his cigarette. The guy drives his cigarette. The guy drives up and Mel just says, please up and Mel just says, please buddy any night but this night buddy any night but this night this is my opening night and so this is my opening night and so the guy smiles he guns the the guy smiles he guns the throttle on the bike and and throttle on the bike and and and then later on one of the and then later on one of the one of the Ballets said, Hey, one of the Ballets said, Hey, did did you see Steve McQueen did did you see Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw did they come up and Ali McGraw did they come up because no I never saw cuz a because no I never saw cuz a guy in a motorcycle. The beard guy in a motorcycle. The beard and a mustache, and then now just uh on your then now just uh on your forehead, I know what was funny forehead, I know what was funny is that Steve and Ali could is that Steve and Ali could have come to the opening and have come to the opening and snap a couple of pictures and snap a couple of pictures and that would have been that Mel that would have been that Mel made it work so he d out on made it work so he d out on that story for 25 years. that story for 25 years. Absolutely. that was me he made Absolutely. that was me he made everything is made it work for everything is made it work for him. No. yes, it’s still there him. No. yes, it’s still there folks if you if you attempted folks if you if you attempted to go once restaurants in to go once restaurants in California. Open again do stop California. Open again do stop by the side in um they only by the side in um they only have thirty rooms. It’s on a have thirty rooms. It’s on a few acres at the foot of the few acres at the foot of the mountains in Vermont. It’s just mountains in Vermont. It’s just beautiful and Melbourne’s is beautiful and Melbourne’s is the classic steakhouse. I mean, the classic steakhouse. I mean, Frank Sinatra got engaged to um Frank Sinatra got engaged to um it’s still very nostalgic and it’s still very nostalgic and they do make a great martini. they do make a great martini. Well, I did my first book with Watson with my first book with Watson with Barbara McLean and it was such Barbara McLean and it was such a huge success, but even better a huge success, but even better and they’re they’re British by and they’re they’re British by the way they’re uh very nice the way they’re uh very nice folks. but they’re the first folks. but they’re the first publisher that I know of that publisher that I know of that first class and spend more first class and spend more money uh then have plans. So I money uh then have plans. So I mean when you’re with the mean when you’re with the publisher like that, you wanna publisher like that, you wanna stick with them um you know, stick with them um you know, for example with with the bar for example with with the bar of Queen book, it had a slip of Queen book, it had a slip case and they said, he said case and they said, he said what else can we do to dress what else can we do to dress this up? I said. Well, I’ve got this up? I said. Well, I’ve got I’ve got a uh interview with I’ve got a uh interview with Steve um on audio. Jack goes Steve um on audio. Jack goes yes, let’s make a CD and let’s yes, let’s make a CD and let’s make this uh special limited make this uh special limited edition numbered signed you edition numbered signed you know all the things that know all the things that unaltered of that’s right so um unaltered of that’s right so um we’ve just maintained. A great we’ve just maintained. A great relationship they come out here relationship they come out here every year and we go up to every year and we go up to Sedona if you know where that Sedona if you know where that is and so we do we do hiking is and so we do we do hiking together up in Sedona and so together up in Sedona and so again it’s it’s a it’s a again it’s it’s a it’s a friendship. um we do hash it friendship. um we do hash it out every now and then when we out every now and then when we have an issue with the book um have an issue with the book um but we always put that aside uh but we always put that aside uh because we do have a because we do have a friendship. Do you have a ritual as write. Do you have a ritual as a writer? it does you have a a writer? it does you have a certain pen and a desk and a certain pen and a desk and a should or how do you do it should or how do you do it Well? I write here in my office Well? I write here in my office and um I thought I. I’m not a and um I thought I. I’m not a lucky place, but I find it a lucky place, but I find it a timeline so I work for the timeline so I work for the college I work for Arizona college I work for Arizona State University and through State University and through November through January, is November through January, is very slow period. Um I get a very slow period. Um I get a lot of writing done that way lot of writing done that way and then, of course when the and then, of course when the semester ends in May from May semester ends in May from May to August is a slow period. so to August is a slow period. so what I’ll basically do is when what I’ll basically do is when I do have a project, I’ll write I do have a project, I’ll write weeknights about 3 hours a weeknights about 3 hours a night when I get home and then night when I get home and then I’ll write all day Saturday and I’ll write all day Saturday and a half day Sunday and so. Most a half day Sunday and so. Most book projects take three to 4 book projects take three to 4 months and if you stick along months and if you stick along that schedule, you’ll get that schedule, you’ll get you’ll get a book finished um you’ll get a book finished um yeah, wow and books like like yeah, wow and books like like Steve McQueen in his own words Steve McQueen in his own words that took 6 years but it was that took 6 years but it was basically I would put together basically I would put together a quote everyday. I would do it a quote everyday. I would do it very slow and then if a another very slow and then if a another book project came along, Keep book project came along, Keep in mind, I said the word pain in mind, I said the word pain um I would give that priority um I would give that priority first and then I would put this first and then I would put this book aside. So that’s why Steve book aside. So that’s why Steve McQueen and his own work. 6 McQueen and his own work. 6 years to write, Yes, I’m oh I years to write, Yes, I’m oh I know I mean you’ve so I’m I’m know I mean you’ve so I’m I’m looking at our questions. looking at our questions. Here’s um inquiring about some Here’s um inquiring about some of the other time and yeah of the other time and yeah you’ve written several unboxing you’ve written several unboxing haven’t you is that another big haven’t you is that another big interest of yours. Well, I interest of yours. Well, I gotta be honest with you. No is gotta be honest with you. No is the answer the first book the answer the first book Unboxing What happened was I Unboxing What happened was I wrote on Aaron Pryor and Aaron wrote on Aaron Pryor and Aaron was a world champion who and I was a world champion who and I read an article in Sports read an article in Sports illustrated about him. He was a illustrated about him. He was a world champion who got addicted world champion who got addicted to crack. And then I wanted to to crack. And then I wanted to write that story. I wanted to write that story. I wanted to wanna know how a world champion wanna know how a world champion got addicted to crack lost his got addicted to crack lost his fortune lost everything uh, but fortune lost everything uh, but then he came back and so there then he came back and so there is ultimately a story of is ultimately a story of redemption um and Aaron is now redemption um and Aaron is now passed away but um uh there was passed away but um uh there was a story of redemption. so when a story of redemption. so when I did the boxing book, then I did the boxing book, then that led me to that kind of that led me to that kind of opened up a world to me my opened up a world to me my mother boxers cuz it’s a very mother boxers cuz it’s a very small, click and um so then the small, click and um so then the same guy that manage managed. same guy that manage managed. Ken Norton Muhammad. Three Ken Norton Muhammad. Three times and so all of a sudden times and so all of a sudden I’m in this world where I’m I’m in this world where I’m attending Championship fights. attending Championship fights. I’m walking down red carpets I’m walking down red carpets with these guys. I’m in a room. with these guys. I’m in a room. I’ll tell you this great story I’ll tell you this great story that I really tell I was in a that I really tell I was in a room with Ken Norton and it was room with Ken Norton and it was a championship fight in Las a championship fight in Las Vegas and they were gonna do a Vegas and they were gonna do a big autograph show um to big autograph show um to coincide with like hours before coincide with like hours before so I walked in this room with so I walked in this room with Ken Norton and Muhammad Ali got Ken Norton and Muhammad Ali got his his back to us and a his his back to us and a private room. There’s a couple private room. There’s a couple of other people and Norton of other people and Norton sticks his finger in his mouth. sticks his finger in his mouth. Wets it and sticks it’s ear Wets it and sticks it’s ear gives them what they call here gives them what they call here a wet Willy and then Ari gets a wet Willy and then Ari gets up and he does that face he up and he does that face he does that and so he pretends does that and so he pretends he’s getting ready to box he’s getting ready to box Norton and I’m looking at Norton and I’m looking at people in the room and I’m like people in the room and I’m like I cannot believe this is I cannot believe this is happening to me. So yeah what I happening to me. So yeah what I find. This was 1996. I’m not find. This was 1996. I’m not sure that iPhones around them sure that iPhones around them but um and then and then uh it but um and then and then uh it was a championship fight and was a championship fight and champions are allowed It’s kind champions are allowed It’s kind of a standing thing where of a standing thing where you’re allowed two tickets you you’re allowed two tickets you go in you go to the fight and go in you go to the fight and so anyway we go to this trailer so anyway we go to this trailer in the back of the MGM brand in the back of the MGM brand and and Aaron Knocks on the and and Aaron Knocks on the door and open out comes Don door and open out comes Don King the famous boxing with the King the famous boxing with the famous hair. Yeah and this is famous hair. Yeah and this is the Tyson Holyfield fight. This the Tyson Holyfield fight. This is like the fight of all fights is like the fight of all fights and I can hear. Clear as day and I can hear. Clear as day Dunking going Erin Do you go to Dunking going Erin Do you go to the Super Bowl the day of an the Super Bowl the day of an ask for tickets and we sure ask for tickets and we sure enough. he gave you tickets and enough. he gave you tickets and like I said that night we like I said that night we walked down the red carpet walked down the red carpet together and then and then I’m together and then and then I’m sitting next to like Joe sitting next to like Joe Frazier and uh Ken Norton and Frazier and uh Ken Norton and meeting just the cream of the meeting just the cream of the crop. I mean it was it was crop. I mean it was it was unbelievable so this whole unbelievable so this whole world of boxing open to me and world of boxing open to me and so this opportunity opened up so this opportunity opened up to me and you know I’d be crazy to me and you know I’d be crazy to turn that opportunity so I to turn that opportunity so I agree with three books and agree with three books and boxes. But what I always try to boxes. But what I always try to focus on was their personal focus on was their personal story cuz the boxing will take story cuz the boxing will take care of itself. Yes, so we care of itself. Yes, so we have. it’s a personal history have. it’s a personal history that you have to you know that you have to you know really find the story I mean we really find the story I mean we have a friend. uh he’s he’s a have a friend. uh he’s he’s a late friend and Vienna Austria late friend and Vienna Austria He used to actually play for He used to actually play for the um the Houston Texans back the um the Houston Texans back in the in the day and he about in the in the day and he about little Austrian guy made a little Austrian guy made a bunch of money in the NFL went bunch of money in the NFL went home um open to steakhouse and home um open to steakhouse and did very well because. He was a did very well because. He was a local celebrity, you know um local celebrity, you know um and during his time in Texas, and during his time in Texas, he befriended foreman and he befriended foreman and George Foreman fell on hard George Foreman fell on hard times. You know he sort of gain times. You know he sort of gain weight and couldn’t couldn’t weight and couldn’t couldn’t box and couldn’t do this and box and couldn’t do this and that you know and he was living that you know and he was living in um two apartments that side in um two apartments that side by each with a connecting door by each with a connecting door and his five kids, all named and his five kids, all named George and uh he went into Tony George and uh he went into Tony French had a steakhouse in French had a steakhouse in Houston. I think it was in Houston. I think it was in Texas and George Foreman showed Texas and George Foreman showed up. 1 day and applied for a up. 1 day and applied for a job, he said. II washed dishes. job, he said. II washed dishes. I’ll do anything I need to do I’ll do anything I need to do and Tony said. I’ve got a and Tony said. I’ve got a better idea. I’ll do a press better idea. I’ll do a press release tell everyone you release tell everyone you bought into the steakhouse. bought into the steakhouse. We’re partners you’ll be the We’re partners you’ll be the greeter you’ll stand up front greeter you’ll stand up front and I’ll give you a piece of and I’ll give you a piece of the action plus minimum wage the action plus minimum wage and he got George back on his and he got George back on his feet. That’s amazing that job feet. That’s amazing that job and then fast forward he left and then fast forward he left Houston went home to Vienna. Houston went home to Vienna. Tony Fridge opened another Tony Fridge opened another steak house and also supported. steak house and also supported. Battered women’s uh in a rehab Battered women’s uh in a rehab shelter for women in Austria on shelter for women in Austria on the border of Hungary so George the border of Hungary so George Foreman then gets his George Foreman then gets his George Foreman Grill going with and he Foreman Grill going with and he gets makes millions of dollars gets makes millions of dollars from the George Foreman Grill from the George Foreman Grill and very quietly flew to Vienna and very quietly flew to Vienna checked himself in a hotel book checked himself in a hotel book the table under a fake name at the table under a fake name at Tony’s Vienna restaurant walked Tony’s Vienna restaurant walked in and great to see you oh my in and great to see you oh my god. I didn’t know you were god. I didn’t know you were coming and handed him an coming and handed him an envelope for a $1000000 envelope for a $1000000 donation to the battered donation to the battered women’s shop. Wow that lovely women’s shop. Wow that lovely by the way I know Tony. Because by the way I know Tony. Because I used to root for the Dallas I used to root for the Dallas Cowboys and he was working was Cowboys and he was working was yeah, that’s right. I knew it yeah, that’s right. I knew it was a Houston team, but isn’t was a Houston team, but isn’t that amazing the boxes My dear that amazing the boxes My dear friend Alan who’s the former friend Alan who’s the former president of national managed president of national managed Larry Homes and would tell us Larry Homes and would tell us incredible stories of humanity incredible stories of humanity on the outside the all of this on the outside the all of this aggression of futurism and for aggression of futurism and for the most part boxes, they’re the most part boxes, they’re like softest new guy in the like softest new guy in the middle, but hot to go well and middle, but hot to go well and it maybe. That uh once they it maybe. That uh once they fight each other, they become fight each other, they become each other’s best friends. each other’s best friends. They’re like long Lost They’re like long Lost brothers. Yeah a phenomenon. I brothers. Yeah a phenomenon. I can’t quite figure out. No. I can’t quite figure out. No. I know it’s just it’s like come know it’s just it’s like come to I’ll smash your friends with to I’ll smash your friends with this soft center. Yeah right, this soft center. Yeah right, but you’ve also written some but you’ve also written some other books. Tell us about you other books. Tell us about you know how you picked like know how you picked like pointed, for example, and you pointed, for example, and you know where do you get your is know where do you get your is your phone ring or do you your phone ring or do you pursue people you wanna write pursue people you wanna write with it. It’s a it’s a with it. It’s a it’s a combination so in in the case combination so in in the case of Ruth pointer, my buddy wrote of Ruth pointer, my buddy wrote um. Story about her and she was um. Story about her and she was so brutally honest. it’s hard so brutally honest. it’s hard to get celebrities be brutally to get celebrities be brutally honest. Her name is Ruth so. honest. Her name is Ruth so. And I just read that story and And I just read that story and said, hey, give me her number. said, hey, give me her number. I want I wanna do a book with I want I wanna do a book with her and so I emailed her and her and so I emailed her and she said, I’ve been wanting to she said, I’ve been wanting to do a book for years and so it do a book for years and so it just worked out that way we hit just worked out that way we hit it off and again. We’re still it off and again. We’re still really good friends she’ll text really good friends she’ll text me just out of the blue to say. me just out of the blue to say. hey how you doing? How are you? hey how you doing? How are you? She’s just that kind of person? She’s just that kind of person? Yes. And that was a fantastic Yes. And that was a fantastic book. I knew nothing about the book. I knew nothing about the pointer sisters, which she laid pointer sisters, which she laid out the history for me and I’m out the history for me and I’m now I know everything about now I know everything about him. So that’s the thing I mean him. So that’s the thing I mean it. When you when you are um it. When you when you are um writing biographies, you might writing biographies, you might not know anything about them, not know anything about them, but if you immerse yourself in but if you immerse yourself in it for a period of 6 months to it for a period of 6 months to a year, you become an expert a year, you become an expert now, I mean I would think like now, I mean I would think like anything but you also probably anything but you also probably have you know you develop as a have you know you develop as a writer, so you need a writer, so you need a relationship with these people relationship with these people that yeah you, it must be hard that yeah you, it must be hard not to see everything take not to see everything take everything they tell you at everything they tell you at face value or see everything face value or see everything through rose-colored glasses through rose-colored glasses right true and. And sometimes right true and. And sometimes as a as a reporter, you have to as a as a reporter, you have to question them, I had I have one question them, I had I have one gentleman that I did a book gentleman that I did a book with and I immediately stop the with and I immediately stop the book. I didn’t wanna be a part book. I didn’t wanna be a part of it was telling me things of it was telling me things that I was checking out and that I was checking out and then I was bringing up to this then I was bringing up to this person and he was he was having person and he was he was having fits that I was checking him fits that I was checking him out and um and so I just said, out and um and so I just said, I can’t be a part of this. You I can’t be a part of this. You know you’ve gotta be able to know you’ve gotta be able to tell the truth and you have one tell the truth and you have one shot at the book and you know shot at the book and you know you’ve gotta tell the public you’ve gotta tell the public what it is that you wanna tell what it is that you wanna tell them and they’ve gotta learn them and they’ve gotta learn from you and there’s gonna be from you and there’s gonna be some redemption in the story some redemption in the story um. So a book a book like that um. So a book a book like that has an ark, you know, it’s the has an ark, you know, it’s the climb to the top and then you climb to the top and then you reach that pinnacle and then reach that pinnacle and then you drop and then then it you drop and then then it becomes who is that person becomes who is that person after the fame. That’s right. after the fame. That’s right. That’s when the story really That’s when the story really gets interesting, I know. yeah gets interesting, I know. yeah how many books have you had how many books have you had published, you know Twenty-five published, you know Twenty-five uh well it just it just and I uh well it just it just and I was thinking about that today. was thinking about that today. Here’s the reason when I first. Here’s the reason when I first. Writing in the late 90s, the Writing in the late 90s, the the publishing the publishers the publishing the publishers would give you two to 3 years would give you two to 3 years to write a book and then you to write a book and then you know time would kinda creep up know time would kinda creep up and then it suddenly became a and then it suddenly became a year and then a couple years year and then a couple years later, then it was 6 months and later, then it was 6 months and now I’m writing books with now I’m writing books with deadlines of two and 3 months deadlines of two and 3 months and they’re just they’re and they’re just they’re crushing crushing deadlines and crushing crushing deadlines and um and so I think that’s how um and so I think that’s how I’ve been able to write so many I’ve been able to write so many yes, but you know so that it yes, but you know so that it becomes okay if. Want me to do becomes okay if. Want me to do that? I’m gonna go into that? I’m gonna go into literary boot camp for two to 3 literary boot camp for two to 3 months. you need to pay me and months. you need to pay me and you need to meet my price so you need to meet my price so that’s right. That’s how that that’s right. That’s how that works out. Yeah. Okay obviously works out. Yeah. Okay obviously but uh I love real books. I but uh I love real books. I know you can Kindle everything know you can Kindle everything so but a real book in my hand so but a real book in my hand is a joy to me you No is a joy to me you No especially this. I’ve been especially this. I’ve been really old and she has to get really old and she has to get her. She’s like I wanna read her. She’s like I wanna read Marshall Steve McQueen, but can Marshall Steve McQueen, but can you lift it up for me? Well, you lift it up for me? Well, you know what I had it weight. you know what I had it weight. It’s five pounds. I know I know It’s five pounds. I know I know I actually got. The scale I actually got. The scale holding it and then put it down holding it and then put it down and you’re right five pounds and you’re right five pounds the subtracted what’s the subtracted what’s distracted and I let go well. distracted and I let go well. I this book is in the can and this book is in the can and we’re just waiting for it to we’re just waiting for it to get released but the uh get released but the uh biography Greg Lori, who’s biography Greg Lori, who’s famous pastor there and in famous pastor there and in Orange County of trees, we did Orange County of trees, we did a biography together, Billy a biography together, Billy Graham and he asked me to be a Graham and he asked me to be a part of that because I. Knew part of that because I. Knew nothing about but boy I sure nothing about but boy I sure was impressed with them when I was impressed with them when I finish uh and and and I finish uh and and and I remember sharing a chapter with remember sharing a chapter with you as I said, I said to the you as I said, I said to the chapter on England where he was chapter on England where he was in uh is in the cynical uh in uh is in the cynical uh press and he had to and he did press and he had to and he did and it was uh that’s a fun run. and it was uh that’s a fun run. Yes, a very interesting. yeah Yes, a very interesting. yeah he ministered to her Majesty. he ministered to her Majesty. did he not yeah he did and he did he not yeah he did and he had. Really that Winston had. Really that Winston Churchill because and this was Churchill because and this was post World War two and uh so post World War two and uh so Billy Graham written about that Billy Graham written about that in his auto biography, but I in his auto biography, but I wanted to really dig deeper. So wanted to really dig deeper. So I consulted a historian about I consulted a historian about that. and I said, I think this that. and I said, I think this was 1954. I’m not mistaken when was 1954. I’m not mistaken when that’s took place and Winston that’s took place and Winston Churchill requested him and so Churchill requested him and so Winston was going through one Winston was going through one of his deep depressions and I of his deep depressions and I consulted the historian and I consulted the historian and I said what it. Have to be said what it. Have to be depressed about it One World depressed about it One World War two. He’s a hero and so he War two. He’s a hero and so he was explaining to me that was explaining to me that socialism was starting to creep socialism was starting to creep up in England and there was up in England and there was talk of socialism communism and talk of socialism communism and now you know you had the now you know you had the Russian red scare and that was Russian red scare and that was starting to penetrate and uh starting to penetrate and uh and so he never really rest on and so he never really rest on his laurels or say II won World his laurels or say II won World War two He was busy worrying War two He was busy worrying about that and so Billy uh had about that and so Billy uh had so he basically. Said to Billy, so he basically. Said to Billy, I lost all hope and he said, Do I lost all hope and he said, Do you believe in hope, Young men you believe in hope, Young men and Billy said. Yes I do and and Billy said. Yes I do and here are the reasons why and here are the reasons why and then when they finished, they then when they finished, they prayed together. Yeah and um prayed together. Yeah and um and so you know in Winston, I and so you know in Winston, I think had battled was raised think had battled was raised with faith and had battled with with faith and had battled with his faith throughout his whole his faith throughout his whole life. But I think I think I life. But I think I think I think he had it there in the think he had it there in the end of his life and you know end of his life and you know who knows maybe Billy Graham who knows maybe Billy Graham was the person that helped him was the person that helped him you know achieve that at the you know achieve that at the end of his life, you know maybe end of his life, you know maybe and. You know cuz he he would and. You know cuz he he would some people who get depressed some people who get depressed and suffer from depression and suffer from depression would take to their bed with would take to their bed with Winston Churchill so Winston Winston Churchill so Winston you always knew when he was you always knew when he was having a bad time cuz he would having a bad time cuz he would get in a bath fill up a bathtub get in a bath fill up a bathtub and smoke endless cigars and and smoke endless cigars and drink, and he would lock drink, and he would lock himself in the bathroom for himself in the bathroom for hours if not days, he would hours if not days, he would just drain the water out and just drain the water out and fill it up again and so I think fill it up again and so I think it was very important for him it was very important for him to find somebody to bring him to find somebody to bring him back to the light. um. And it back to the light. um. And it Billy Graham was that person Billy Graham was that person well, then he was very smart to well, then he was very smart to request him and get together request him and get together with him well, The beauty of with him well, The beauty of that story is that I think the that story is that I think the story I think the meeting was story I think the meeting was only gonna last 5 minutes, but only gonna last 5 minutes, but it lasted forty and Winston it lasted forty and Winston kept of winds are waiting for kept of winds are waiting for like a half hour and he yelled like a half hour and he yelled as secretary. He can wait. okay as secretary. He can wait. okay is that only wins well the car is that only wins well the car well, this must be a wonderful well, this must be a wonderful book.
