U.S.S. Monitor; Sailors relaxing on deck, July 9, 1862 - While attached to McClellan's headquarters at Harrison's Landing, Virginia, James Gibson boarded the USS Monitor. The only photographs ever taken of the USS Monitor were shot that afternoon.

Dad was the skipper of a WWII mine sweeper, not because it was the job he wanted to do, but because it was the job given to him after naval training school. There was not much technology in those days. A lot of luck was involved as to whether you found & destroyed a mine, or it destroyed you.
