Example of a "bog body". These bodies, buried in bogs (marshes) are assumed to be sacrifices to gods. They show evidence of being groomed before their death, with trimmed fingers and clean shaven faces, suggesting that they were of high social status; these have been found in many parts of Northern Europe. The chemical composition of the bog preserves the body, keeping these human remains in excellent condition.

The "Bog Bodies" of northwest Europe date from the Iron age, some 2000 years ago, and have been reserved throught the centuries by the peculiar conditions of peat bogs: low temperature and oxygen; high levels of tannins. Most died a violent death; strangulation, decapitation, stabbing or ritual sacrifice.
