It's dinner time! Last week I went to Kua Mexican Kitchen, an awesome Mexican restaurant at Torenstraat 77 in #DenHaag. And oh my, this food is so good! Daniel and his crew serve authentic Mexican food, for example the original "mole" sauce in a few dishes, you have to try this. It's great and it has 47 different ingredients. The Mexican natural flavored sodas by Jarritos are pretty good too or even better, the margaritas. Every Tuesday and Wednesday from 17:30 till 19:30h it's happy hour!
Haha busted! This building, 't Goude Hooft (the golden head) used to be the oldest tavern in town, built in 1423. I like old stories about the city and how cool, knights used to have meetings here! In 1660 Pieter Post rebuild it and he added the golden heads on top of the building. Through all these years they rebuild it several times. In 2012 the latest drastic renovation was finished. Now you can sleep here again, enjoy a nice breakfast, lunch and dinner or party in the club, called 1660.
The renovated part of De Pier in Scheveningen is open for the public again! Did you know that the previous pier opened in 1901 and burned down in 1943? The Germans decided at that time to break the whole thing down, because they were afraid for an attack starting at sea during WW2. After the war, this pier was built in 1961 and opened by Prins Bernhard. They are renovating the lower part at this moment, a hamburger bar will be opened in the future and a big wheel as well!
Brothers Léon & Raoul reopend their concept store at Grote Marktstraat 10 in #DenHaag today! Look at all this awesome stuff! New and fashion, industials, accessoires, home products from different brands are all available in the shop. They organize events in there as well, in cooperation with other businesses, like Junk Food ot Lola Bikes & Coffee. Bring your wallet and shop till you drop!
Look up! #DenHaag has a lot of nice old buildigs, this one is one of my favorites. The golden sign says Haagsche Bluf, you'll find this beauty at Dagelijkse Groenmarkt 25 - 26 in the city center. Architect De Wolf designed it in 1906 and the facade is still in great shape. The building housed Modehuis Schröder for years, now Grandcafe Haagsche Bluf resides here.
In #DenHaag we like Haagse Hopjes, it's coffee and caramel flavoured candy. The story goes that this candy is named by his founder, Baron Hendrik Hop. He was a coffee addict and one night he forgot to remove his coffee with sugar and cream from the stove. The next morning he found his 'chunks' of coffee. This doctor told him to stop drinking coffee, so he asked his neighbour to make him some of the chunks again. In 1880 they named the chunks Haagse Hopjes.
One of the most peacefull and relaxed places in is De Waterkant at the Westbroekpark, open from Kingsday untill Prinsjesdag. Take the tiny ferry at the Haringkade to get there for some nice tea or to rent one of the rowing boats to explore the area.
So it's hard to believe that they are really going to demolish the Dr Anton Philips Zaal and the Lucent Dance Theatre at Spui within a few weeks.. But the theatre will give you one final (and I think pretty cool) opportunity to say goodbye on the 9th of July between 12:00 - 17:00h. On this day they will be hosting an awesome big flea market in the foyer. You can buy hundreds of books, CDs, LPs, photos, posters, pens and furniture before they move to the new Zuiderstrand Theatre.
One of my favorite 'buildings' in #DenHaag is this one, it's designed by Eric Vreedenburgh. You find the modern facade decoration at the little square between the Kettingstaat and the Achterom, at the back of the DOK store. Did you know that we call it the Baljurk (ball gown)? Pretty cool name, right?
I have to admit, I love (better said, I'm a little addicted) te search for cool old things at second hand stores, Marktplaats or flea markets. One of my favorite stores for treasure hunts is Mooi MUF, at Beeklaan 194 in #DenHaag. They have vintage furniture, lamps and wall decoration items from the fifties and up. This place is also prefect if you just want some inspiration for your (future) home. Open Thursday untill Sunday.
Ok.. I'm an ice cream lover, a big one. When my mom was pregant with me, she started to eat a lot of ice cream, I blame her for my addiction. But she did a good job, I even work for a couple of ice cream brands at the moment. Once in #DenHaag go to Luciano's at Theresiastraat 41. It's one of the best (and awesome looking) in town! What do you think of flavours like Raspberry Crumble Pie, Kinder Bueno or Meringue?! They even have their own an ice cream lab in the store!
Life is better at the beach - so they say and I absolutely agree! There are many places to enjoy the lovely weather and many, many more to enjoy some nice fish. I have a couple of favorite places to go when I want to eat fish. One of them is De Dagvisser at Dr. Lelykade 26 in #Scheveningen. This restaurant has a very nice view over the harbour, a sunny terrace till late (amen!), a supernice staff and the most important thing: good food! I mean, look at those shrimpies!
Oeeeh I found a good one! Yesterday I discovered this amazing hidden urban garden called Emma's Hof at Galileïstraat 44 in #DenHaag. Our own little Gaudi is in town! It's open every day from 10:00 till 20:00 h. The neighbourhood takes care of the garden and organizes different activities on monthly basis.
Every day I drive past this cool building, the old entrance of the Heilige Geest Hofje (holy spirit court) at Paviljoensgracht 125 in #DenHaag. It's built in 1616 and the oldest court in town. Inside there is a big garden surrounded by old (cute!) houses. In the middle of the court you will find the oldest pear tree of the Netherlands. Are you only in town for a few day? One of the houses is a guesthouse for 2, how cool is that?
I'm in love with the tram stop Beatrixkwartier and 'the tunnel', we call it the Netkous (fishnet stocking) in #DenHaag. On a sunny day like this, it's even more beautiful, i mean.. look at those shadows ! Zwarts & Jansma Architechten did a good job between 2004 and 2006. RandstadRail number 3 and 4 stops here.
