2014 Cut Flower & Landscape Garden Planning & Execution
Collection by Dianna Knight
The time is now upon us! I've been so busy getting everything ready, I've not updated this board in a while. So before I get too far along, I'll catch you up! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Deciding what I'll do in the raised beds next year, based on what I've learned this year. Primary focus is Sunflowers and Zinnias, with a few perennials to grow & relocate as landscape plants in the yard. I'm simplifying and keeping my scope small but achievable :) Hopefully that will be the key to success!
Pruning a Miss Bateman Clematis
Pruning a Miss Bateman Clematis. A popular heirloom clematis, Miss Bateman boasts 6-inch white flowers with pale green stripes on their undersides and red stamens. It should be planted in full sun or partial shade in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 to 9, where it will vine from 5 to 8 feet. ...
By the back door .. I like the similar colors, contrasting textures & heights w the Daylily & the Arizona Sun Gaillardia. Started the Gaillardia from seed last year, or maybe it was 2012. Had some Yellow Sun Gaillardia in the same bed, but it disappeared. I've direct down a few seeds this year - fingers Xd!
8 May - 6 seeds planted in 12 sq ft ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Autumn Beauty Sunflower - Going to try this one again, with new seeds (only a couple 1 sprouted of the ~20 I direct seeded). Tall, branching plants flower in a color range including shades of yellow, bronze and red and bloom over a long season, making multiple cuts possible. Matures in approx. 75-90 days. PS - took this shot myself 2 yrs ago, w/ iPhone 4s

12 May - gettin tall enuf to need supports, so I put in 3 cute trellises I had in the shed. I plan to tie (green) tomato wire around the outside of each trellis, to form a mini cage to support the glads. Also hoping the Asiatic & day lilies will also provide some support once they get established and grow a bit more.
9 May - ordered Clematis jackmanii (superba) online (for some reason they're not avail in stores in this area (SWVA)). Plan to train it to grow out & down a retaining wall & intertwine w an established Clemats Miss Bateman.
10 days later (25 Apr) .. Been fighting with some kind of varmint (I'm thinking groundhog or deer, both are plentiful in this area). After 3rd application of RepelsAll, the plants have remained untouched for a week!
3 May - 3 plants planted in landscape, 4 plants coming up from last year (woo hoo!!) AM sprinkler waters each day to help establish 2 new plants, hand watering the other; returning plants only occasional hand watering. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Echinacea - purple & white coneflower will bloom Summer thru Fall. I had good luck stratifying these & getting them to sprout in the Spring. I just didn't get them into the ground :( Will try again this year, with more.
Daylily from this AM .. Smells divine! Also has a glittery sheen to the petals .. Hard to capture with a camera. I'm going to cut this scape & bring indoors to let the other buds open - hope that works out as we as I think it will, but you never know .. LOL
Daylily @ M&D's .. Everything in the front yard is so happy w the soaker hoses running on a timer & the new mulch! I hope to get a few of these when we divide this clump in the fall.
And here's the AFTER shot, when I'd finished dividing & planting 18 *very* large plants & raked the mulch all back into place. I try to take a pic a week & post. I just love seeing everything grow!
