an artist's impression of a black hole in the sky with a bright light shining through it
3C 273is a quasar, which is a very energetic and distant galaxy with an active galactic nucleus. 3C 273 is the brightest quasar in our sky in optical wavelengths. If it was placed 32.6 light years (10 parsecs) away from Earth, it would be as bright as the Sun. It has a large visible jet extending 200 light years from the center of the galaxy. A band named Ayreon wrote a song called “To The Quasar” which is about 3C 273. http://gems.gsfc.nasa.gov/gallery-sciencetargets.html
