In one of the most infamous pictures of WWII, a member of the SS prepares to shoot a Jewish woman with her back to him, desperate to protect her child. A single bullet from his rifle was sufficient for both at such intimate range. Anecdotes say that the shooter - a Hungarian Auxiliary - was drunk when he did this, and upon sobering up, was so horrified at his deed that he committed suicide.

Auschwitz Gas Chamber - It is estimated over 1m Jews lost their lives at Auschwitz-Birkenau, infamously known as 'the camp of death.' And as these haunting scratches inside one gas chamber reveal, many inmates would never see another day.

Hans-Adolf Prützmann (1901-1945) was an SS and Police Leader and a Waffen-SS-Obergruppenführer. He was a senior Nazi in the administration of Latvia following the German conquest of that country in 1941, and was involved in carrying out the Holocaust in the Baltic States. After the war, Prützmann was arrested as a war criminal and committed suicide while in custody. His remorseless, cold eyes in this 1934 photograph are chilling.
