Designed in 2011 by architects Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh, this surrealistic folly in the Belgian city of Borgloon is composed of 100 evenly spaced layers of steel that are stacked, to almost diaphanous effect, in the form of a nave and steeple. Inspired by local church buildings, the 30-foot-high structure was created as a longterm work of public art along a walking path.

Belgian architect group, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, built a church in Belgium, and it’s pretty plain from certain angles. From others, the structure reveals itself to be something else entirely: a building that’s almost entirely see through.
