The Iwo Jima Memorial is about a 20-minute walk from Arlington National Cemetery. The monument is a moving rendition of the iconic image of the second flag-raising on the island of Iwo Jima during World War II. On this day in 1945, during the battle for Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines raised the American flag atop Mt. Suribachi.
President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on November 25, 1963. The site was designed by architect John Carl Warnecke, a long-time friend of President Kennedy's. The permanent John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame grave site was consecrated and opened to the public on March 15, 1967. http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/jfk.htm
