Brown Hyenas mainly feed on carrion but they will also catch live prey such as small mammals, fish, birds and insects. They also supplement their diet with fruit, vegetables and eggs. Unlike spotted hyenas, Brown Hyenas do not hunt in groups. They also regularly cache surplus food which is usually consumed the following night.

Brown hyenas can be distinguished from other hyena species by their long shaggy coat and pointy ears. Brown hyenas have incredibly strong teeth and jaws, enabling them to crush bones and release the nutritious marrow inside. In spotted-hyena families, ladies rule the roost. Females are bigger and stronger, winning the spots in the pack hierarchy and intimidating the males. The guys are so afraid of the females that fathers will take commands from their little girls. If a dad behaves nicely, his daughters will treat them kindly when they become adults. The Striped Hyena. This small hyena species roams the lands of North and East Africa, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. Though a nocturnal scavenger by trade, the Striped Hyena has been known to hunt small prey. Today, fewer than 10,000 Striped Hyenas exist, placing them in the ‘threatened’ category.

Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyaena): though dog-like in appearance & some behavior, hyena are not canids. They are in the feliforma family & are related to civets & cats. The striped hyena is probably the most attractive of the 4 species of hyena
