How to capture electric sparks on film There are still a few very unique and interesting things that can be done with film but not with a digital camera. One of these experiments is the recording of sparks on film. Sparks are created when an electrical discharge moves either through or across the surface of the film. I first got interested in this project when I noticed static discharge patterns on x-ray film. Those patterns were due to the charge buildup on the plastic rollers in the auto…

The History of Electrostatic Generators

The story of the Reivers dates from the century and continued into the late century. It concerns the border between England and Scotland, a frontier lacking law and order.

An early Leyden Jar: In 1745, the so-called Leyden Jar (or Leyden Bottle) was invented by Ewald Jürgen von Kleist (1700-1748). Kleist searched for a way to store electric energy and had the idea to fill it into a bottle! The bottle contained water or mercury and was placed onto a metal surface with a ground connection. The Leyden jar enabled the charges produced by the generators to be stored for large periods of time. Other improved static charge storage devices followed.
