Paint any wood furniture without sanding. DIY newbie and had no issues! Buy valspar bonding primer for glossy surfaces and a good quality latex paint with a gloss finish (more gloss = scratch resistance). Use foam rollers and foam "brushes" for hard to reach areas. Let primer dry 2hrs before painting. I used 2 coats of paint (wait 2hrs minimum between coats). Follow the instructions on the paint cans for temperatures and other care just to be safe. If changing handles, make sure the new ones…

Apparently I can repaint furniture without sanding if I use the BullsEye primer/sealer, which is supposed to stick to anything, and then do a couple coats of paint. The primer/sealer can be tinted, so if I'm going with a dark color, I'll tint it first before applying.
