Voor eenvoudige vissers en boeren waren stoffen schaars en duur, en om de levensduur van kleding en textiel te verlengen werden ze hersteld met decoratief sashiko. Ook werden meerdere lagen stof met sashiko op elkaar geborduurd: zo werd de stof sterker en het kledingstuk warmer - net als het Amerikaanse patchwork. Het resultaat van al die lagen stof, een gerafelde, grove textuur, heet dan weer boro.
