Peter J. van Dijk werd op 19 februari 1960 geboren te Drachten en groeide op in het dorp Surhuisterveen. Hij volgde de middelbare school te Drachten (Het Drachtster Lyceum) en studeerde vervolgens Nederlands en Geschiedenis in Groningen en Leeuwarden. In deze laatste plaats woonde hij van 1979 tot 1988. In 1987 volgde Peter J. van Dijk een workshop proza schrijven bij Oek de Jong. Naast schrijver is hij docent Nederlands en literatuur bij het Babel en James Boswell instituut.
