Desk & bookcase, eastern Maryland, 1740-50. Made of walnut, this example has 3 features typical of the late Baroque style in Britain & America: arched door heads, corbeled, or stepped interior drawers, & a well concealed under a sliding cover. Here the well opens to an upper drawer, which, like the lipped fallboard & drawers, reveaals the transitional style of this piece. The beveled & wheel-cut Vauxhall glass of the bookcase was enormously expensive & is therefore rare on American case…

A Queen Anne parcel-gilt black-japanned desk-and-bookcase, circa 1710, upper section with a flat molded cornice above a pair of cupboard doors fitted with an arched bevelled mirror plate & opening to two adjustable shelves above a level of pigeon holes & banks of scallop-fronted drawers, lower section fitted with a slant-front opening to a writing surface before a sliding panel & valanced pigeon holes above small drawers... raised on bracket feet.  H 7 ft. 1 in.; W 42 1/2 in.; D 23 in.

A George III Satinwood and Satinwood Inlaid Secretaire Bookcase,     Circa 1785,     Height: 95" Width: 42" Depth: 22".       The fretted swans neck pediment over a dentil and lambrequin-molded cornice and curvilinear glazed doors opening to adjustable shelves; the lower section fitted with a secretaire drawer opening to a leather-lined writing surface and arrangements of drawers and pigeon holes, above three crossbanded graduated drawers on splayed feet.

Unique to this museum is the historical presentation of its collections, largely unchanged since the late 18th and 19th centuries. As a whole, the building and the collections are a monument to two centuries of cultural history. The 18th-century ensemble is wholly unique.
