Krampus - beast-like creature from the folklore of Alpine countries thought to punish children during the Christmas season who had misbehaved, in contrast with Saint Nicholas, who rewards well-behaved ones with gifts. Krampus is said to capture particularly naughty children in his sack and carry them away to his lair.
On the Feast of St. Nicholas in Mitterndorf, Austria. St Nicholas on a white horse parades through the village on a white horse followed by these bad guys, the Grumpus, who warn the kids to be good -- or else!
5th December. The day of the Krampus, an alpine mythological creature who accompanies Saint Nicholas to punish children who weren’t well-behaved enough to get treats for Christmas. On this day you might want to stay home if you are easily scared - the Krampus will roam the streets all day, hunting those who provoke them.
