THE READER (2008) - Post-WWII Germany: Nearly a decade after his affair with an older woman came to a mysterious end, law student Michael Berg re-encounters his former lover as she defends herself in a war-crime trial.
Hook the Reader I think to introduce hooks in a story the student should have the option of playing with writing with different hooks. To do this you could challenge them to use different strength levels of hooks by inviting them to go "fishing". Minnow=little hook, Bass Fish=medium hook, Shark=huge hook. Could be done with a sticky hand and fish on the wall. :)
