Wallis Simpson - Duchess of Windsor was an American socialite whose third husband, Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom and the Dominions, abdicated his throne to marry her in 1936.

(Winston Churchill, then a Tory member of Parliament, called her the king’s “cutie.”) Wallis had wanted out of her relationship with the neurotic Edward for years. “This man is exhausting,” she complained in 1934, back when she still fancied herself “in control of the situation.” She used to say, in later life, that she aged ten years in 1936 and the one thing for which Wallis never forgave the Duke of Windsor was his decision to renounce his throne.
