Palace on Peacock Island... Just southwest of Berlin, Germany, there is an island in the river Havel where peacocks roam free, goats and buffalo graze in the meadows. King Frederick William II of Prussia (1744-1797) had a summer palace built for him and his mistress, designed to imitate a castle ruin, complete with a false stone facade. Pfaueninsel or Peacock Island is a Unesco World Heritage site as well as a nature reserve and a special protection area for wild birds.
