Team Show Jumping | Oughton Limited

I had a dream last night that I was commissioned to create the showjumping jackets for the U.S. Olympic team. The traditional pink jackets worn by riders who represent our country in international competition are hard to improve upon. In my dream, I obsessed over what to do, eventually keeping […]

Charlie the jumping mule

Remember Jennibray? My friend Trisha saw the blog post about her and was immediately reminded of her husband's grandmother Elizabeth (Libby) Swift and her jumping mule, Charlie. Trisha writes: Libby would enter this mule and compete against warmbloods and beat all of them. Eventually the shows banned mules (wonder why?) so Libby had her OWN shows (and still won). Charlie was so much a part of Libby's life--we have photos of Charlie IN the house when Libby had guests over. Although neither of…

Charismatic Baron Takeichi Nishi / 西 竹 with Uranus (they won show jumping individual in 1932 Los Angeles Summer Olympics). He was a tank unit commander at the Battle of Iwo Jima and was killed in action during the defense of the island.

Colonel Baron Takeichi Nishi. Olympic Gold Medalist and defender of Iwo Jima. He remains Japan's only Olympic medal to date in an equestrian event (1932 Olympics, Los Angeles). He was popular among Japanese Americans, who were ostracized by American society in the 1930s. During his stay in Los Angeles, Nishi became the topic of conversation both for his love of driving convertibles around town and for becoming part of the social circle led by movie stars Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks.

Anyone not know Snowman's story? An Amish country, PA, plowhorse was on a van to the slaughterhouse after failing to sell at a cheap horse auction. Harry de Leyer, there to pick up a hack for student lessons, arrived late; missing the sale. Noticing the 8 year old gray, Harry bought him for $80. Snowman was a lesson horse until Harry saw he could jump and started training. Two years from a plow - and death - Snowman was in Madison Square Garden and won the 1958 open show jumping Triple…
