Frankendael History

Frankendael's history dates back to the seventeenth century, the Dutch Golden Age. It is the last manorial estate standing of 80 (!) manorial estates initially, once used by Amsterdam's wealthy merchants as summer houses. In the past, the area called Watergraafsmeer belonged to the outskirts of Amsterdam or the countryside even, but nowadays it is absorbed by the city and in the midst of one of Amsterdam's nicest quarters.
