Sandsound, Shetland
Sandsound, with Tresta at the far right of the photo, in the Westside of Shetland. In the bottom left corner of the image is the old school (used until 1880s). Sandsound Voe is a narrow inlet of the North Atlantic. Like most areas of Shetland, the walking here is fantastic with open vistas and great views.
Culswick, Shetland
An evening walk to Culswick, May 2019. Even though the horizon was misty, the air was still and fulmars were circling overhead, so it was a beautiful walk. The small blue flowers are spring squill - the first few of the year. They carpet the tops of the cliffs and a couple of weeks later were joined by clumps of sea pinks.
Burrastow walk and Foula, Shetland
View of snow-capped Foula whilst walking out West near Burrastow. Foula is the most westerly of the Shetland Islands and is considered remote, even by most Shetlanders! The walk near Burrastow is one of many way-marked routes in the Isles and the coastal scenery is fantastic.
Walking in Unst - Shetland
The walking possibilities in Unst (the most northerly inhabitted island in the UK) are wonderful. We found this piece of wood standing proudly on the coast near the Keen of Hamar. It was such a beautiful shape and I have no idea why it was there. I suspect it was driftwood found by a previous visitor and erected in an artistic manner - if you know different, please get in touch. . .
Shetland - Great place to walk.
Shetland - A great place to walk. You can walk for miles, along the coastline and over the hills - often without meeting anyone. Like the rest of Scotland, the Scottish Outdoor Access Code allows you to walk almost anywhere in Shetland, as long as you do it responsibily. See our blog about where you can walk in Shetland and also our advice about hill-walking in the Isles.
Mangaster, Northmavine, Shetland
The walk from Mangaster is amazing - dramatic cliffs and lovely inland lochs with views in all directions.. Here at the lovely old cairn (I have a thing for cairns) on Lang Head, with the coastline of Northmavine and Eshaness stretching off into the distance. See a blog about the walk on our website.
Grimister, Yell, Shetland
A walk from Efstigarth, near Mid Yell in July 2019. We walked up the peninsula on the left of this image towards Nev of Stuis. This is the view from Grimister, near the end of the walk. It is a remote, rugged corner of Yell, little visited with views to the Mainland over Yell Sound and it was a wonderful 8 mile walk, despite the overcast conditions.
What a difference a day makes! Yesterday was grey and drizzly all day, and we got lots of rain overnight. However as forecast, it really cleared up and this was our lunchtime stop today. We walked from Gloup around the north-west corner of Yell. This is the view out to Gloup Holm, with our dog taking the chance of 40 winks. It's a walk I've been wanting to do for a while and it really was fantastic - lots of interesting geology, old abandoned buildings, wonderful birdlife and stunning views in a
I love where I live! Shetland, especially the Westside (I'm biased), is such a wonderful place. Today we have sunshine and blustery showers - the light and colours are changing constantly. This photo was taken 30 minutes ago, 400 metres from our house. Now I'm back indoors there's a 'haily' shower and it's really black outside, with the sea a gorgeous steel-grey. . . #shetland #shetlandisles #visitshetland #shetlandislands #60north #exploreshetland #myshetlandlife #inspiredbyshetland #promotes
I love cairns - there's just something about them. This one at Scatness in South Mainland of Shetland, looking towards Sumburgh Head with the lighthouse on top - see yesterday's post for a close-up of the lighthouse. This cairn appears to be quite new and under construction! We found it on our weekend walk. ------------ #shetland #shetlandisles #visitshetland #shetlandislands #60north #exploreshetland #myshetlandlife #cairn #walkshetland #inspiredbyshetland #promoteshetland #thewildern
Another image from last weekend's walk that was the subject of my blog, posted on our website yesterday - web address in the bio. It is an excellent Westside walk and really recommended.⠀ . ⠀ #shetland #shetlandisles #visitshetland #shetlandislands #exploreshetland #promoteshetland #myshetlandlife #inspiredbyshetland #coastalwalks #stayandwander #walking #hiking #gowander #exploremore #walkinguk #coastmaguk #travelmore #goexplore #roamtheplanet #thewildernesstonic #hiddenplaces #remoteplaces #be
Another great morning for a walk in Shetland, this time near Vementry. The reflections in this small freshwater loch were beautiful today. It's such a peaceful spot when the weather is calm, although two whooper swans took flight very noisily as we approached. Some places I feature in posts require a walk (sometimes a long one), but this photo was taken from the road before we started walking, so no need to be an avid hiker to access this landscape. ------------ . #reflections #shetland #shetl
