As design heroes go Welch has been one of the most influential on my thinking at present. Influenced by his visits to Stockholm whilst studying, Welch brought the revolutionary Scandinavian flair for modern design back to Britain and in particular focused on stainless steel tableware in his final year of Silversmithing at the Royal College of Art. The stainless steel designs he completed for Old Hall brought good affordable design to British homes between the late fifties and mid-seventies.

This is from my own collection; a stainless steel tea strainer designed by Robert Welch for Old Hall Sheffield as part of their Campden range circa 1957. If you look on the underside of the strainer you can clearly see “DESIGNED BY R. WELCH” above the Old Hall mark.
