Stage 2 - Rhine river to IJ river: From the former early medieval emporium Dorestat (Wijk bij Duurstede) to the Roman castellum Flevum (Velsen) at the IJ that two millenia ago connected Lake Flevo with the North Sea. Here the expansion stopped of the Romans and their Batavian minions after their defaet against Frisians in 28 AD. Lake Flevo flipped into Zuider Sea in the 8th century and back again into a lake, Lake IJssel, after the Closure Dike in 1932. Yes, we do love big scale water play.
