Jan van Goyen - Dutch Painter
Jan Josephszoon van Goyen was born in Leiden in 1596, studied art in Haarlem and established a permanent studio in The Hague at age 35. He was a prolific artist with some 1200 paintings and 1000 drawings attributed to him. He was primarily a landscape artist. His work did not attract high prices and he fell into debt in spite of working as an auctioneer and speculating in tulips and real estate. After his death in 1656, his wife had to sell all their property to pay off these debts.
