Sigyn was the wife of Loki, and when the Æesir bound Loki to a rock with a serpent dripping venom unto his face (as punishment for his role in the death of Baldur), Sigyn held up a bowl to catch the venom before it could harm him. Of course the bowl fills up and she occasionally has to go empty it. In this interval the venom drips onto Loki and he writhes in pain, causing earthquakes.
