Have you ever done science experiments with candy? This is a fun "classic" one. You put skittles or M&Ms in a small dish with water. Then you wait and watch the colors spread! This is best done in a clear bowl or plate so that you can watch the colors easily. Another fun thing that happens is that after a bit, the little white Ms float up to the top of the water!
When I taught second grade, I discovered that my kiddos did not really understand the difference between the words "dissolve," "melt," and "thaw." So we tried it out, and then labeled it. Then, I passed out an ice cube to everyone, and they let it melt in their hands! I think that they understood it much better after that! Science should always be as hands-on and visual as possible, I think!
