Circa 1905 photo of the 17th century brick church tower on Jamestown Island. For decades this was the only visible remnant of the first permanent English colony in North America. Through most of the 19th century there was no formal visitation; people simply took their boats to the island to picnic near the tower.
Jamestown was a settlement in the Colony of Virginia. Established by the Virginia Company of London as "James Fort" on May 14, 1607. It was the first permanent English settlement in what is now the United States, following several earlier failed attempts, including the Lost Colony of Roanoke. It would serve as capital of the colony for 83 years (from 1616 until 1699).
