Star Light, Star Bright

While we were studying outer space I introduced the overhead projector for the first time this school year. A family lent me the blue mesh to hang over the area and I used a frame from a pop up house to hold it away from the wall. The frame is just the right size for the children to go inside and open enough for a grown up to be involved. A few things we used were constellation pictures and mesh stars. Then I added coloured plexi-glass stars, coloured circles and stir sticks with see through…

Instead of a mirror behind the light table how about a wall of CDs? What would it do outside mounted on a wall or fence? or as a table

An Atmosphere for Creativity

According to psychologist Alan Bowd of Canada’s Lakehead University, children need to foster thinking skills such as these to encourage creativity: Fluency -- produce many responses to an open-ended question or problem. Flexibility -- generate unconventional ideas and view situations from different perspectives. Originality -- produce unique, unusual, or novel responses. Elaboration -- add rich detail to ideas. Visualization -- imagine and mentally manipulate images and ideas. Transformation…

Reggio inspired provocations, e. Light Table - in a quiet corner of the room. We added coloured plastic ice cubes that the children used to create games, designs, and for construction. One Provocation, Three Emerging Studies

Some of the children were quick to recognize their own shadows and delighted in the discovery of this new kind of self-awareness. Identity of self is a significant development in the early years. How can we continue to support this interest in "self" in other ways? How else can we challenge the children's perspectives and assumptions about identity? How do the children learn to recognize themselves in a variety of contexts? — at Garden Gate Child Development Center.

One Provocation, Three Emerging Studies

Our overhead projector was an irrisistible invitation to explore for many of the children in the Little Room during our first week of school. As we began to document the children's shadow play, we began to notice some distinct patterns of play and discovery emerging. For teachers who are "researchers", these patterns present an interesting place to begin our thoughts about curriculum and project work for the year. At Garden Gate Child Development Center.

Arch creates a nice oneor two person space. Here it is a space for the overhead projector and light work. On Display: Havergal College

Happy Friday Everyone! Today's "On Display" post features an interview with my dear colleagues from Havergal College. I have visited the Kindergarten program at Havergal twice, and left with my head filled with many questions and ideas to pursue in my own context. Some of their inspiration lead us to our "Beautiful Stuff" project, "The Best Part of Me" project, the Math Learning Carpet, and an overall improvement in our graphic design skills for our student portfolios and pedagogical…
