Art lesson for 1st grade

The August art session with my little "firsties" was a HUGE success. We created "Wild About 1st Grade" self-portraits. They turned out so dang cute! It was a lot of fun to combine some guided art along with "do your own thing" directions. The bulletin board is adorable. We'll be adding their writing prompt responses to "I'm WILD About 1st Grade Because..." as soon as we finish the edit process. This week, 2nd grade started their Fall reflection paintings. These were created in just a few steps. This project was inspired by, Lauralee Chambers . Create 3 boxes with 4 inch tops and 4 inch bottoms. And yes I had to teach 1st graders how to use the ruler! Then use the ruler to create horizontal and vertical lines inside your boxes. Draw a heart inside each of the 3 boxes. Color in the hearts first and then the backgrounds using a repeating checker board patten.
