Common beech

It’s easy to recognize a beech tree by its smooth, gray bark. They can be gown singly on an open site or lining driveways in parks and large properties. Beech wood is used for making a variety of products including furniture, flooring, toys and containers.

The American Beech Tree produces small nuts that wildlife love, and its smooth blue-gray bark and golden fall leaves make it easy to recognize.

Beech trees fagus sylvatica are one of the finest trees to find in an Irish woodland. This non-native species was introduced at some point in history, many centuries ago at least, and has become so widespread that it would appear to be a native Irish tree. Growing very tall, beech trees often provide shelter for the forest floor below and, as seen in the image above, it often holds on to its leaves through autumn and winter giving a lovely red/brown to the woodland landscape above ground…
