Grace ✨ Home + DIY Furniture on Instagram: "What is color washing? A color wash is a great way to imitate the look of stain. It’s also a great technique for layering paint! Basically, a color wash offers a nice subtle look by diluting your paint. The most common color wash you’ll see is a white wash, which can help mute orange tones in wood. However, you can make a wash with any color! Some of my favorites are: A black wash which can offer a nice aged look when applied to bare wood. A slight green wash which can neutralize some of the reddest of bare woods. A tan/brown wash which can mimic the look of a customized stain on bare wood. A color wash isn’t only applied to bare wood. You can also apply a color wash on top of a previous painted surface to add more variance and contrast t Paint Wash, Color Washed Wood, Layer Paint, Orange Wood, Brown Paint, Furniture Finishes, Black Stains, White Wash, Staining Wood

A wash will add color without sacrificing the visual interest of the wood’s texture; all you need to do is dilute paint with water. A wash will add color without sacrificing the visual interest of the wood's texture; all you need to do is dilute paint with water. Start by adding one part water to two parts paint, and test the wash on a wooden swatch before working directly on your surface. If you want to see more wood grain, continue to add water. You'll notice that as the wash gets lighter, the tone of the wood's original color comes through. We took Martha Stewart Vintage Décor paints through three dilution stages to…

Erica Beach on Instagram: "Here’s my technique:

If you want to neutralize red tones in wood, do a 1:10 green wash (1 part green paint, 10 parts water). Mix the two and wipe it on. Do not wipe off. Let it dry completely. Then test it with a damp cloth and see if the undertones are where you want. If not, apply the wash again and let dry. Once you have it toned down, you can add your preferred paint wash (taupe, beige, black, the options are endless). Apply the wash with a cloth or brush and let it dry. Apply until you reach your desired wood color.
