Elsa started her career in theatre and cabaret and began playing small roles in British films in the late 1920's including the role of Anne of Cleves with husband Charles Laughton in 'The Private Life of Henry VIII' (1933). It was her joint role as Mary Shelley and the iconic title character in 'Bride of Frankenstein' (1935) that brought her mass recognition.
