Dunbar is located just over the Anglo-Scottish border on the east coast of Scotland . The English Parliament's New Model Army , led by Oliver Cromwell, won the battle.

Sir Philip was a Scottish knight on the side of the English, he was at the time the Constable of Stirling Castle and made a pact with Edward Bruce who was besieging the castle, they agreed that unless an English army came to relieve Stirling Castle by Midsummer day the following year, then the castle would be surrendered to the Scots, and that is what led to the Battle of Bannockburn. When the battle was last, Philip refused Edward entry to the castle. He later joined the Bruce cause.
