America is a Big Country. So big that, in her rush for the better and faster, she left behind a few human beings who, not fast enough to keep up with her pace, rested among her folds. John Register…

I first came across John Register when his work got featured in a little-known gem of a film from Curtis Hanson. It served as a mood fixture that parallels with the storyline of the lives of the characters.

Late Afternoon Light (1994-95). He married Catherine Richards, a photographer, in 1964 and moved to New York, where he studied design and television at the Pratt Institute, which had been founded by his great-grandfather.

Three Tables, 1993, oil on canvas, 50 by 50 inches. Above all else, Register's paintings--permeated with a pristine quality of light and rich colors--reveal an artist who recognized with an unerring eye the existential essence of scenes from everyday life. Often compared with Edward Hopper, Register commented, "With Hopper you witness someone else's isolation; in my pictures, I think you, the viewer, become the isolated one."
