This results in the pulling, tension and discomfort you are feeling in your neck and head. The goals of this exercise from the postural restoration institute are to help you expand into this muscle and give that muscle a break. Trust me it’s a great one that I use often 👏🏻 💆‍♀️! Megan Dahlman on Instagram: "😫 Shoulder blade knots and painful kinks in the neck? It’s so tempting to want to dig in to massage it out and stretch it out. But did you know that this could make it worse and take longer to release? A LOT of those knots are from tense, cramping muscles. And your neck muscles in particular are fairly sensitive and will cramp even harder if they feel threatened. So you’re very best bet is to take a far gentler approach. 1️⃣ Start with deep breathing down in your diaphragm. This can get control over the “fight or flight” response that causes you to “neck breathe”. 2️⃣ Do gentle, easy stretching at about 50-60% tension. Don’t force it. If you massage or roll, it should feel gentle, too. 3️⃣ Shoulder blade circles can activate the opposing muscles, like Tense Shoulders, Flight Response, Neck Muscles, Knot Out, Shoulder Knots, Deep Breathing, Stretching, Muscles, Pilates
