In ancient Greek and Roman legend the Machlyes were Libyan tribe of hermaphrodites or androgynes whose bodies were male on one side and female on the other. The historical tribe known as the Machlyes inhabited the region about Lake Tritonis in north-west Libya. The warlike practices of the young women and long-hair of the men probably gave rise to the legend of androgyny.

The Sea Bishop or bishop-fish was a type of sea monster reported in the 16th century. According to legend, it was taken to the King of Poland, who wished to keep it. It was also shown to a group of dudes, to whom the bishop-fish gestured, appealing to be released. They granted its wish, at which point it made the sign of the cross and disappeared into the sea.
