MUSCLE TISSUE: Muscle tissue is important for movement and is highly vascular to meet its energy demands. They are highly excitable cells specialized for contraction. There are three types of muscle tissue: skeletal, smooth and, cardiac. Refer to individual pictures for detailed descriptions.

In order to be absorbed and used, food must be “digested”, that is, it must be broken down into small pieces. Each portion of this tube has a different shape and function. It starts at the mouth and ends at the anus.

Myology is the study of muscles. More than 600 skeletal muscles make up the muscular system, and technically each one is an organ—it is composed of skeletal muscle tissue, connective tissue, and nervous tissue.
