One of the biggest factors I've found to influence how well they turn out is the quality of the paste I use. Having a more fluid texture paste than I use with other designs helps a lot. Either use a texture paste that is already fluid by design, or make your paste more fluid by mixing in some acrylic paint.  Use a plaster comb (sometimes also known as a notched trowel) with relatively narrow teeth. Light source. I’ve ignored this in the past and that was a huge mistake.

You need to see which direction the predominant source of light is. If you have multiple windows like I do, use your best judgment. You want to roll in the direction of the most light.
Any overlaps will essentially become shadows when you roll in the wrong direction.

Unless you are a pro, flat paint is your best bet for paint finish. It’s like a concealer for mistakes and will give you the best outcome for a beginner.  I used @behrpaint scuff defense
